01How to read it
- Sizes to scale
- Every object is drawn at its true size compared with the others. The gaps between them are not to scale.
- measured
- A published measurement, rounded.
- estimate
- Measurements vary. The caption gives the range.
- disputed
- Sources disagree. The caption says which value is drawn.
- Star colours
- Computed from each star’s surface temperature. The square beside its size is that colour.
- Photos and drawings
- Nebulae and galaxies are real photographs. Anything marked “illustration” is drawn from measured sizes.
- Motion
- Planets, moons and stars turn slowly so they feel alive. The speeds are not their real rotation.
- Units
- Lengths are given in metric and imperial.
